The flag of Galicia, as we know it today, has its roots in the 19th century. During this period, many Galicians emigrated to the Americas, and A Coruña became one of the main ports of departure. The maritime ensign of A Coruña, which originally featured a blue St. Andrew's Cross on a white background, had to be modified in 1891 due to its similarity to the war ensign of the Imperial Russian Navy. The solution was to simplify it, removing one of the arms of the cross and leaving a diagonal blue stripe on a white background.Although there is debate about how and when this flag was adopted as a symbol of Galicia, it quickly became established in the Galician collective consciousness.
